A practical guide to caravan awning care
Simple habits that help caravan awnings last: drying, gentle cleaning, spot checks and knowing when reproofing may be appropriate.
Dry it before long-term storage
Packing damp fabric can encourage staining, odour and mildew. If weather forces a wet pack-down, open the awning again and let it dry fully as soon as practical.
Start with the least aggressive clean
Brush away loose dirt, check the care label and test any suitable cleaner in a hidden area. Strong detergents and aggressive scrubbing may affect coatings, colour and waterproof performance.
Inspect seams and high-stress points
Look around corners, attachment points, seams and areas that rub against poles. Small problems are easier to address before the next windy campsite.
Reproof only when the fabric is suitable
Reproofing is not a universal fix. The fabric must be identified, cleaned, dried and patch-tested, and the product must suit the manufacturer’s instructions. Damaged or delaminating material may need specialist repair or replacement.
