Caravan care after a coastal stay
Salt, wind and sand travel farther than they look. Here is what to inspect after camping near the New Zealand coast.
Rinse before salt dries repeatedly
A gentle fresh-water rinse can help remove loose salt and sand from compatible exterior surfaces. Avoid forcing water toward vents, seals, electrical fittings or openings.
Check solar panels and windows
Salt film can reduce clarity and hold further dirt. Use separate clean, soft tools and the correct method for each surface—especially acrylic caravan windows, which scratch more easily than household glass.
Open, dry and inspect the awning
Wind-driven salt and sand can settle in rolled fabric and hardware. In calm conditions, open the awning, remove loose material gently and let everything dry before storage.
Look underneath without crawling into danger
From a safe position, look for obvious debris or fresh corrosion around accessible fittings. Brakes, chassis treatment and structural concerns belong with the correct caravan service professional.
Record anything that changed
Photos of marks, seal concerns or damaged fabric are useful. Early documentation helps you monitor whether an issue is stable or needs specialist attention.
