7 caravan solar-panel cleaning mistakes to avoid
Protect the panel, roof and yourself by avoiding the most common caravan solar-cleaning mistakes.
1. Walking on the roof
A caravan roof may not be designed for foot traffic, and a wet roof adds slip risk. Work from ground level with suitable equipment or use a professional method that does not require roof walking.
2. Cleaning a hot panel
A panel sitting in strong sun can be very hot. Sudden temperature change and fast-drying water can leave marks, so choose a cooler part of the day and follow the manufacturer’s care guidance.
3. Using abrasive tools
Scouring pads, gritty cloths and stiff brushes can mark protective surfaces. Start by rinsing loose contamination and use a clean, soft, non-abrasive tool.
4. Reaching for strong chemicals
Bleach, solvents and unsuitable detergents may affect seals, coatings or nearby caravan materials. Use clean water or a product specifically confirmed as compatible.
5. Pressure washing
High-pressure water can force its way toward seals, junction boxes and roof penetrations. A controlled low-pressure rinse is the safer default.
6. Ignoring stubborn contamination
Do not attack bird droppings or sap with a hard edge. Soften the deposit patiently and stop if removal would require force or an unapproved product.
7. Assuming cleaning fixes every power problem
A clean surface cannot repair a controller, cable, battery or electrical fault. If performance remains unusual, record the symptoms and contact an appropriately qualified solar or electrical technician.
