Will rain clean caravan solar panels? A New Zealand spring check
Rain may shift loose dust, but flat caravan panels can still hold pollen, salt and bird droppings. Learn when a safe spring clean is worth doing in NZ.
The short answer: rain helps, but it may not finish the job
Rain can move loose dust, especially when a panel has enough slope for water to run off. It should not be treated as a complete cleaning plan, though. Current JinkoSolar module guidance says a tilt above 10 degrees helps rain wash dust away, while lower angles can require more frequent cleaning. A fixed caravan panel that sits close to flat may therefore keep grime around its frame or beneath stubborn deposits.
Why spring is a sensible time to look
After winter storage, a panel may carry leaf fragments, windblown dirt, coastal film, pollen or bird droppings. You do not need to clean it simply because the calendar says September. Start with a visual check from a safe position, then compare the panel's condition and charging behaviour with similar daylight conditions. Dometic's vehicle solar guidance lists dirt, objects and shade among possible causes of low output, while also noting that overheating or a component problem can be responsible.
What rain is unlikely to remove
Repeated showers may leave bonded bird droppings, sap, oily road film or a band of dirt at the lower edge of a panel. Salt spray can also dry into a film after coastal travel. If contamination remains after rain, do not scrape it or reach automatically for a strong household cleaner. Check the instructions for the exact solar module and caravan roof before choosing water, tools or any cleaning product.
Use the gentlest compatible method
Manufacturer instructions take priority. As a general starting point, work when the panel is cool, remove loose grit without grinding it into the surface, and use clean, soft, non-abrasive equipment with controlled water. Avoid pressure washing, abrasive pads, solvents and unapproved detergents. Canadian Solar's current installation and maintenance manual calls for regular maintenance and specifically warns against permanent shading from dirt and debris such as bird droppings.
Do not turn a surface clean into a roof risk
A clean panel is not worth a fall or a damaged caravan roof. Do not assume the roof is walkable, and do not climb onto it unless the caravan manufacturer permits it and an appropriate safe-access system is being used. WorkSafe New Zealand's ladder guidance says ladders do not provide fall protection and recommends eliminating work at height where possible. RoamCare's standard service does not include walking on caravan roofs.
If output still seems low, separate cleaning from diagnosis
Judge performance only under reasonably comparable sun, shade, temperature and battery-demand conditions. A clean panel cannot repair a loose connection, damaged cable, failed controller, battery issue, micro-crack or delamination. Stop and use an appropriately qualified solar or electrical technician if you see damage, exposed conductors, water ingress, heat damage or persistent abnormal readings. Cleaning and electrical fault-finding are different jobs.

The practical takeaway
Let rain do what it can, then inspect rather than guess. If loose dust has gone and the panel is performing normally, no extra clean may be needed. If low-angle runoff has left obvious contamination, arrange a gentle, manufacturer-compatible clean without walking on the roof. If the symptoms remain after the surface is clean, treat that as a possible system issue and call the right technician.
